The Penn-Wortman Houses Community Garden project in East New York is officially complete, thanks to the incredible work led by the Tenant Association board members. The garden will provide fresh and locally grown produce to the community and is a great example of what can happen when community members, local businesses, and neighbors work together to positively impact their communities.
The L+M team, alongside residents, the Tenant Association and local leaders New York State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud and New York City Council Member Chris Banks, gathered to celebrate the garden‘s opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The project was spearheaded by Tenant Association President Karima Williams and Penn-Wortman residents, who worked to preserve this vital and beloved community asset. Much of the work and materials were donated by local businesses, including local landscape company Greengage Urbanscape, who provided soil, plants, and installed the raised garden beds, and Pacific Lawn Sprinklers, who donated and installed the drip line irrigation system.
The garden project is part of the broader Stanley Avenue PACT revitalization project across the Linden and Penn-Wortman campuses, which included the preservation and modernization of almost 2,000 apartments, a community center, offices for on-site social and resident services, and public space improvements.
